Mag Drills – What Are They and Why Should You Use Them?

There are many tools beyond welding machines that welding engineers can benefit from using, but it can be difficult to figure out what those are. A mag drill is certainly one of those tools, and for anyone who is unsure of what a mag drill is, you’ve come to the right place.

In this blog, we’ll detail what a mag drill is, their benefits, and why you should consider using one.

The Benefits

What are Mag Drills?

Very simply, a mag drill is a magnetic drill that is used to cut and drill metal.

There are four main parts on a mag drill; the magnetic base, an arbor or chuck, that is used to hold the drill bit or cutter, a drill stand and a motor (which is usually a DC motor).

Versatility

The range of job sites welding engineers work on can be incredibly varied.

One job you might be working in a traditional workshop, the next at a dock or even a large building site.

With different job sites can come different scenarios that can sometimes present challenging work areas.

With its magnetised base, mag drills are extremely versatile. They can be placed on a wide variety of metallic surfaces, allowing you to carry out work in hard to access locations.

Mag drills can also be placed horizontally, vertically, or even overhead and still provide a high-quality and safe performance.

Adaptability

Alongside the variety of environments they can be used in, many mag drills come with a selection of accessories that help with a range of applications, including annular cutters, twist drills, taps, reamers and counter sinks.

Most mag drills are also very easily transportable, allowing you to bring them to any worksite, whether it’s in the city centre or the rural countryside.

Precision

Making a mistake when drilling metal can be time consuming and costly, but with a mag drill the risks are hugely mitigated.

The magnetic base provides excellent stability and precision, whilst fixed vertical travel eliminates much of the lateral movement that occurs with hand drilling, resulting in higher accuracy, consistency, and speed.

Together, these elements save you time and money while ensuring a professional finish.
